1. By a form referred to as “Direct Marketing” Brothels advertise their services in highly visited areas where they would potentially have the highest potential of customers to attract for their services. “Brothels ensure a steady stream of customers by advertising aggressively at bus stops, parks and other high traffic pedestrian areas."
2. Potential customers are given nonverbal signals known as the “Nod and Wink” to inform the Brothels that they are interested in their services. Upon making contact, potential customers are given some form of business card advertising professional services; however potential customers are aware that these advertisements serve as a decoy. “After identifying qualified customers (typically Spanish-speaking males), advertisers pass out "tarjetas" — business cards with ads in Spanish for phony products and services like men's cologne or house-call manicures. “Johns" know the ads are for sex. "Squares" likely never give the cards a second thought.”
3. Potential customers will have to “Read between the lines” to decipher the Brothel coding. Some of the business cards will have the direct address of the Brothel while others may only have a phone number. Other clues are offered on the business cards as well to inform potential customers of the various services offered. “Some "tarjetas" will have codes - like wings indicating a brothel that delivers. Sometimes a call has to be placed to get the location of a brothel; other times the address is right on the card.”
4. There are two options potential customers entertain Brothels, one of them are by a mode of “Delivery.” Brothels setup services whereas you do not have to leave the comfort of your home to participate. They are a list of drivers on payroll who are responsible for couriering the girls to respective clients. “If delivery is an option, trusted car services are sometimes involved, with drivers taking a fee. Sometimes employees of the brothel drive girls around. Busy brothels keep long lists of available drivers, who share the profits with the brothel owners.”
5. The second option is known as the “Door Man.” Potential customers follow the clues given to them on the business cards or if they have to call someone to obtain an address. Customers are interrogated via a form of questioning to validate that they are not an undercover police office. “When a "john" visits a brothel, a "door man" will ask probing questions: "Where are you from?" "Where do you live?" "Where did you hear about us?" If the story and the accent check out, the customer he can gain entrance to the closed-network brothel.”
6. These Brothels are organized in homes or apartments in what is deemed as a normal safe family orientated neighborhood. The next step after potential customers are validated is known as “The Sale.” “Inside the brothel — usually a normal house or apartment — available girls or waiting "johns" sit on couches in a sparse living room. When a "john's" turn comes he goes to a man called a "ticketero" and hands him money — usually $30 for 15 minutes.”
7. Once the potential customer has paid for services, they are given some form of “Token.” Tokens similar to DMV waiting tickets are a form receipt to show the girls that the potential customer has paid and is used as a method for the girls to keep track of their perspective customers. “The "ticketero" gives the "john" a token (a playing card, a marble, a poker chip or a glass bead). Girls keep the tokens to keep track of how many "johns" they see at the brothel. Even though they keep a count, many girls are not paid.”
8. The next process is known as the “Selection.” This is a limited service option because depending on the Brothel you will have to get whichever girl is available. In some Brothels, potential customers are allowed to select a certain type of girl to appease their sexual appetites. “Depending on the brothel, a "john" can select a girl. Often there are as few as two girls servicing as many as 50 men each in a night, so there are not always options. Ledgers are used to keep track of visits."
9. The step in the process is similar to the Wizard of Oz known as “Behind the Curtain.” Potential customers are show to a room where areas are sectioned off and divided by sheets. This is where potential customers have the option to have sex with the girl they just paid for. “"Johns" follow girls to a room. Often large rooms are divided up by nothing more than hanging sheets. There is rarely anything other than a sparse bed, and products like sanitizer, lubricant, condoms and paper towels within."
10.
